New York’s Triborough Bridge Now Named for RFK

Governor David Paterson (D-NY) will sign a measure to rename the Triborough Bridge in honor of the Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The state Senate approved the measure honoring the late Senator from New York in April. The Triborough Bridge, which opened in 1936, connects Manhattan, The Bronx and Queens.
“Naming the span across three boroughs is a tremendous tribute to Robert Kennedy’s commitment to bridging divides between black and white, rich and poor young and old and to his commitment to a more just and peaceful world” said Kerry Kennedy, one of Robert Kennedy’s 11 children.

Robert Kennedy, the younger brother of John F. Kennedy was shot on June 5, 1968 after winning California’s Democratic presidential primary. He died the next day. “I cannot think of a more fitting tribute – a man who sought the bridge the divisions in our nation will now be honored by a bridge that connects three boroughs of the City of New York. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy and ideals live on in all of us,” Patterson said,
