A Happy Mothers Day to All Mothers Out There
A happy mothers day wish to all mothers on this day that honors them. Mothers are special. As a man I will never have that experience. They carry their children in their womb and they carry their children for the rest of their lives. I want to acknowlege my mother, Kathleen Morton Lewis. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on August 7, 1935 she raised two sons, myself and my brother. A kindly woman, she always wore her heart on her sleave. She attended the University of Edinburgh and was know for her vocal talents and entertaining energy. She could have fun at the drop of a hat, and was a great cook, a nurse to when we were sick, an shoulder to cry on when we did not have a friend in the world. She was the one to welcome new neighbors, help out those less fortunate and befriend people quite easily. She should be canonized for raising my brother and I who were terrors. She moved to the United States in 1961. She met my father and moved to Ossining. But as with all of us, she had her weaknesses and she suffered very deeply from a chronic and terminal disease. Tried as she did to fight this disease, it continued to rear its ugly head. She died on Sunday, June 7th 1992 at Phelps Memorial Hospital, the same hospital where she gave birth to me after 24 hours of labor pains. Her life was a struggle. She left me a legacy of many things – a book called “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran, a copy of her 12 and 12, and deep appreciaton for music and the arts. She also left me the will to fight. That she was taken so soon from me is not lost on Mother’s Day. Tomorrow families will be gathering in restaurants and homes to celebrate the wonderful thing called motherhood. I will go to the cememtary and bring her flowers, just like I did when she was alive. Life always moves toward tomorrow, never back to yesterday. So tomorrow, honor your mother. It is through her you came into this world. For good or for bad. When we honor our mothers today, we honor life, and all the joy and sorrow that it brings us, and we honor the moments when we were nurtured and cared for, the sacrifices made, the guidance given, and even the lessons learned from them when we realized that they too were human, with faults and defects, broken dreams and unfilled desires and weaknesses that they could not on their own manage to conquer. To be a mother one of life’s greatest joys and profound sorrows. Let us remember it on this day.
